Let's start

we are going to learn a new etymon "le(a)v" with the word "alleviate". The etymon "Le(a)v" means "raise" and it is used in many words.

Alleviate=Al+lev+(i)ate
Alleviate=al-[to]+lev[raise]+(i)ate-[v.].

The word consists of three etyma, "al" means "to", "lev" means "raise", and "(i)ate" at the end of the word indicates that the word is a verb. By combining them together, we can easily deduce that the meaning of the word "alleviate" is closed to " to raise something up".

And it is very easy to find a basic combination between what we deduced and the definition in the Oxford Dictionary. "to make something less severe".
